Basic Categories

There is never enough time in the day for an SLP; between reports, assessment, actually giving therapy, and other school related tasks- I find very little time to make new materials. So, what I do have time to make, must "multi-task" to meet the needs of many students. Mayer-Johnson's Boardmaker Studio is one of my favorite tools for making therapy materials. This is one of my creations- I may have borrowed this idea from something I saw on Pinterest. :-). This was originally made for a non-verbal student in order to improve her understanding of categories which is a necessary skill when using an Aug Com device. This is obviously a receptive task for her, but I will also use this with verbal students to help develop not only categorization skills, but to target their ability to describe and define. Category is always the start of a good definition. Some students will be expected to respond, "A dog is an animal" while other students may then be asked to provide more details, "A dog is an animal with fur. It has four legs and a tail. It barks and people have them as pets."

I am currently enjoying my Spring Break, but when I return to work, I will try to upload the files from boardmaker that I used to create these so anyone can make them.
